“CONFETTI”
have very ancient origins. It was a Roman custom to celebrate weddings
and births with them, as testified by the Fabi family (447 BC) and Apicio,
close friend of the emperor Tiberius (14-37 AD); in less distant times,
we can find mention of them in one of Boccaccio’s novels and in
a sonnet by Folgore di San. Gimignano (XIV Century).
However, the production of “ confetti “ as it is intended
today began in Sulmona in the XV Century, as proved by some documents
dated 1492-1493, that can be found in the Town Council. Another priority
in Sulmona is the artistic manufactory of “ confetti” that
also originated in the XV Century at S. Chiara’s Monastery (St.
Claire), which allows “ confetti” to be assembled in the shape
of flowers, bunches, ears of wheat, rosaries and baskets, held into shape
with silk threads.
Sulmona “confetti” affirmed themselves in time, until completely
dominating the markets around the world, due to their particular taste,
given by the purity of sugar syrups, and to their different shapes and
flavours.
THE "CONFETTI PELINO - SULMONA" COMPANY HAS ALWAYS RESPECTED
AND STILL RESPECTS THE ANCIENT FORMULA, and still today it produces “confetti”
of the purest sugar, without using flour or starch; it is thanks to their
genuineness, natural sugar-whiteness and to their patented production
technique, that the Company has received, in the past and in recent times,
the highest national and international honours.
The present owners, the sons of Alfonso and Olindo Pelino, pick up the
inheritance of a tradition started by their ancestor, Bernardino (born
in 1750), and continued by Panfilo (1794), Francesco Paolo (1833), Alfonso
(l858) and finally by Mario (1892)..
